This top ranked variety in the Meikan chart by the Japanese Fukiran Society has always held the No. 1 position. It is well known for its wide and consistent cream-yellow marginal variegation with strong contrasts, known to be the best of its kind. Fuukiden has wide and slightly curled leaves called "Himeba". The plant has red, sometimes mud root and moon-type "Tsuke". It was found in the 1860s in Ooita pref. in Kyusyu Island. All plants of Fuukiden are passed down from true divisions of the original plant. This leaf variegation would never change from beginning to last until matured. However 1st year new growth starts all white, no chlorophyll and 2nd year green center line appears and it takes 5-6 years to complete this variegation change. The flowers are white in colour, around 3-4 cm in size and have a strong jasmine-like fragrance.
