Saikaku is a rare mutation from Nishidemiyako with only one plant found amongst thousands of Nishidemiyako seedlings ever produced. All plants are divisions of the original plant. The leaves are wider, longer and more curved as compared to Nishidemiyako, having a wavy shaped tsuke. The yellow marginal variegation may morph into wide central variegation on some of the newer growths. It is highly ranked in the Meikan chart by the Japanese Fukiran Society, alongside Ginsekai and Tamanishiki. The flowers are white in colour, sometimes slightly mutated and have a strong jasmine-like fragrance.
