This species produces striking, long-lasting waxy flowers, with 8 to 30 blooms borne on upright inflorescences up to 50 cm long. The blooms are highly variable in color, ranging from yellows and browns to rich burgundy and purple, but are instantly recognizable by their most distinctive feature: the narrow petals and sepals are characteristically spirally twisted along their entire length.
